Thobi mobilises SAR 2.5 m in seed funding

The company has managed to deliver more than 1000 thobes to customers across 47 cities in Saudi arabia during the first half of 2020. “Thobi, with its technology, will disrupt the traditional thobe tailoring business in the region. We see a huge opportunity for scale and growth in this segment,” said Abdullah Almedbel, head of investments at ABN Ventures.

Saudi Arabia-based online retailer Thobi, has raised a SAR2.5 million ($670,000) in a seed round led by ABN Ventures and Abunayyan Holding’s VC Investment arm. Launched in 2018 and co-founded by Khalid Abanami (CEO) and Abdulmajeed Alresaini (COO), the startup describes itself as a “smart thobe tailor”, allowing its customers to order custom-made thobes online. Its propriety technology enables its customers to take accurate calculations of their body measurements remotely.

Toppr has amassed 13 million users, more than 150,000 of whom are paying subscribers.

Toppr’s catalog covers 17 subjects and prepares students for five dozen competitive exams, explained Toppr founder and chief executive Zishaan Hayath in an interview with TechCrunch. A portion of Toppr’s library is available to students at no charge on the Learning app, but full access requires a membership. The subscription starts at 1,000 Indian rupee ($13.35) and goes as high as 3,000 Indian rupee ($40). The startup launched Codr, a product aimed at helping all school-age children learn computer programming, last month. A Codr session costs about $9.35. Toppr also maintains a free problem solving app that enables a student to take a picture of a question and get its solution instantly, explained Hayath. In background, the app uses character recognition and machine learning to sift through a large bank of problems Toppr has amassed over the years to determine solutions.
